Nepal vs Sri Lanka match abandoned in Florida due to rain

LAUDERHILL: Sri Lanka and Nepal fixture abandoned after the rain soaked Central Broward Regional Park in Lauderhill, Florida, which was slated to host their first match at the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup on Wednesday.

Incessant rain, heavy enough to trigger flash-flood alerts for local residents, left both teams splitting one point apiece. It all but ends Sri Lanka’s hopes of progressing to Super Eight contention while Nepal’s chances of qualification also take a hit in Group D. Both sides are still searching for their first tournament victories.

Nepal turns their attention to South Africa, in what’s now a must-win fixture for the Asian side. However, the Proteas currently Group D toppers, were confirmed a place in the Super Eight.

Sri Lanka’s final game is against the Netherlands on June 17.

Locals will be hoping there’s more luck with the weather this weekend, as three more matches are scheduled in Florida with the venue set to host USA and Ireland on June 15.

Later, India will clash with Canada on the 15th and Pakistan with Ireland on the 16th.
